Photoshop At 24 FPS
(A presentation of the drawn, moving image arts.)

Synopsis : A workshop tutorial hosted by the artist (Benjamin Poynter) that demonstrates the process of animating traditional, 2-D characters

in mirror of one’s own identity. The demo works through a step-by-step method that includes hand drawn illustration, digital illustration, scanner operation,

working with Photoshop, audio gathering, editing/animating the finishing project on Final Cut Pro, and exporting into a high quality (HQ) movie.

“Know the Identity in Silhouette” (prelude/history)

“A brief run-through on interesting truisms about traditional animation. Terminology.”

“Know Your Body, No Seriously” (illustration : hand drawn)

“The basic human skeleton/anatomy. Why it makes sense without drawing humans too.”

“But I can’t draw! That’s why style was invented.”

“Hand drawn illustration : a demonstration + pros and cons.”

 “Know It’s Only 0’s and 1’s” (scanning)

“Scanning your hand drawn image. Preferred settings and how to save the files.”

“Know that Photoshop is a Metaphor For Playing God” (illustration : digital; image altercation/photoshop)

“Digital illustration : a demonstration + pros and cons.”

“Altering your images & files to move like the wind. Basic PS techniques involved in animation.”

“’What format to save as? Like… an .mp3?’ The difference between .jpg and .psd.”

“Know the Enemy : Time” (animating/editing on final cut pro)

“The main event : Final Cut Pro. Setting up. Basic methods.”

“Training your eye to pause time. Where to place images. When?”

“The lovely layers. Why depth of field is king. And why it takes forever to render.”

“Know Your Killing Blow” (movie conversion)

“Video exporting methods (.mpeg, .avi, .mov), and how to make your baby HQ.”

“Know You Knew” (epilogue)

“What to expect from knowing these skills. How it intertwines with reality, and why it’s forever useful.”

“Viewing the product that the artist developed in demos throughout the tutorial.”

CONCEPT FOR THE END PRODUCT

Inspired by-

www.inbflat.com (a collaborative video-sound project)

The end product of Photoshop at 24 FPS is what I hope to be the fruits of a collaborative effort within the hour elapsed.

Animation is a tiresome beast for one. For a pack of inspired artists, it can be a spectacle seeing how much force

of creation can be completed in such a small amount of time through this context of collaboration.

The vast amounts of differing experience, on and off canvas, can be endearing.

After the tutorial and workshop on 2-D animation, this proposed project can come to fruition-

Title : Blurry Wind

There is such emphasis to one's single identity in the world.

Where do I fit in? DO I fit in? Am I one of them? Do I want to be myself?

These questions are the subject of experimentation for Blurry Wind.

The canvas of this project will be the website (benjaminpoynter.com).

COLUMNS and ROWS of photos/headshots will be arranged above-

COLUMNS and ROWS of embedded video of :05-:10 second animations.

The objective will be for the audience to identify the correct human who

created their 'animation' of a character in a blowing wind. The variable will be

the participants themselves : a melting pot of those who secretly want to be admired

and those who seek a greater shelter. An answer sheet will be given to the exam taker-

When they've linked each animation to each headshot, they may click on a link to an

answer sheet to see how well they could 'identify' somebody in this restless

world of blurry personality and easily lost reason.
